Why the VMAs suck

Last years VMAs were mediocre. This year it was just “wtf just happened?” Seriously. First of all the only parts I look forward to are best direction/editing/special effects/etc etc.

Let me give a little run down of each of these categories:

Best Cinematography
Christina Aguilara – The Voice Within
Beyonce – Naughty Girl
Jay Z – 99 Problems (Winner)
No Doubt – It’s My Life
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Maps

Okay, not bad at all. This was my same choice. 99 Problems had excellent cinematography.

Best Direction
Jay Z – 99 Problems (Winner)
No Doubt – It’s My Life
OutKast – Hey Ya
Steriogram – Walkietalkie Man
The White Stripes – The Hardest Button to Button

Okay… Jay Z wins. Not my personal choice (White Stripes was my choice) but granted 99 Problems did have some good direction… no biggy.

Best Art Direction
Im not going to bother listing these videos. Apparently I have no idea what the word Art Direction means because none of these videos had anything resembling art. I would of guess videos like Modest Mouse – Float on or Franz Ferdinand – Take Me Out would of been in this category.

Best Editing
Jay Z – 99 Problems (Winner)
Jet – Are You Gonna Be My Girl?
Simple Plan – Perfect
The White Stripes – The Hardest Button To Button
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Maps

Okay, yeah 99 Problems had some good editing in it. The other videos were okay. But seriously… The Hardest Button To Button… They didnt use computers to move the drumset and Jack and Meg around. They actually filmed them in each location they appear in. This creates what editors call “stop motion.” This is a very long procedure as you have to do everything frame by frame. This… this video should have won. I am really to upset to continue.

Finally: Best Special Effects
Incubus – Megalomaniac
Modest Mouse – Float On
OutKast – Hey Ya (Winner)
Steriogram – Walkie Talkie Man
The White Stripes – The Hardest Button to Button

Wow, this was a good year for special effects. Incubus, Modest Mouse, The White Stripes, and these are just the videos nominated. Wait… What’s that? OutKast was nominated? Why? Hold on… let me get this straight. Andre 3000 copies himself as 4 other band members and all of a sudden his video is nominated for special effectS? They’ve been doing stuff like this for a LONG time. Hell, they did it in the original parent trap and that movie is probably older than Andre 3000 himself. Seriously, this was the most upsetting category for me. White Stripes should of won this for the same reason it should of won editing.

Final Verdict of the 2004 VMAs

Jay Z won everything because it was his last album (which is probably just a publicity stunt and we’ll see another album in 2 years). And remember kids, if you use outdated cheap techniques in your videos, you are gauranteed to win an award!

The VMAs are officially tasteless

Whoops

Hey… Yea… Um… I was at the Olympics.

Okay no I wasn’t. But this has been a very busy month for me. I had to get everything situated for college and then college started. I’m starting my third week tomorrow. Not much else other than that. I’ll post college related stuff once the semester gets interesting.

In other news I’d like to plug this great band, Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players

This is an awesome band whose CD I ordered and am waiting for it to arrive.

Games I want

This is a list of upcoming games I want. I haven’t got any new games in a while and I havan’t posted much about them so I will give you a little of what to look forward to from me because I will be getting these games.

PC
-Half-Life 2 (this game is pretty much in the bag for me. I will have it the day it comes out)
-The Sims 2 (I won’t be getting this game right away, I need to build up the funds but I will be getting it)

GameCube
-Donkey Konga (same deal with Sims 2)
-Resident Evil 3, Code Veronica, 4 – (Lol, I really need to get RE3 and RECV. I want to get those before I get RE4 so I it will be like next year before I get to RE4.)

GameBoy Advance
-Pokemon LeafGreen (I have the funds to get this. This will be the only other game I get right away. I’m going with Green because I had Red back on the original version)
-Final Fantasy I & 2 (Simply put, I love Final Fantasy)

Mountain Trip to Japan, 2004

I keep forgetting to treat my website like a blogger. I just remembered I was supposed to be doing that today (with the MK and dog video post) and heres a new one.

Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players is this band I just found out about today. I hate it when I find out about the good bands after they’ve been around for a while. Anyways how to describe this band… It’s like They Might Be Giants? with a touch of “kiddy song”? with a touch of wtf? Theres really no way I can explain this band other than “indie.” Have at it boys and girls and check this band out! I am definately buying their CD!

Oh my God, so awesome. I just found a link off of their official website. The link is of them playing on the John McEnroe show of a song called Middle America:

The Definition of Happiness

Okay, so ever since the beginning of the year, Midway was on my black list, my “publishers to boycott”. Well they aren’t anymore. They have announced that MORTAL KOMBAT 6 WILL BE COMING TO GAMECUBE. They originally announced that it wouldn’t. When I just read that they will bring it to GameCube I was overcome with joy. Though the GameCube version won’t hit the shelves until early 2005 as opposed to the PS2 and Xbox counterparts it will have two exclusive features that the PS2 and Xbox versions won’t. !!!!!!!

Twovies

I just saw two of the best movies I saw all year (except for Kill Bill vol 2, yeah they even top my impressions of The Village).

Napoleon Dynamite and Garden State.

I was so upset that Napoleon Dynamite was limited release. But it finally came to my town all of a sudden. I didn’t even realize it was here until I was looking for movie times for the Exorcist (which I passed on today). Napoleon Dynamite was THE funniest movie I have seen in a VERY long time… atleast since Old School. It is full of “one liners” you would say but it is great. I don’t know if I will laugh as hard the second time around but it’s all about first impressions and this one delivered. The girl was hot too 😉

And then theres Garden State, writtin and directed from the main character of Scrubs. When I first heard about this movie and what it was about I knew I was going to love it. I saw it today after Napoleon Dynamite (which set a high standard for the next movie I would see) but Garden State met the standard. It was like a dark comedy I guess. It’s one of those movies that are good because it’s like a piece of art. I LOVE going to movies and I view them as art and this was a masterpiece.
